So what do we take from this? I’m not sure. As a white woman, I’m surprised at some things, and not at others. The Red Sox at position #1? I asked some baseball enthusiasts why they thought so many white women listed the Red Sox- and was told that the Red Sox are the whitest team in the league. Its also high up in the “stuff white men like” list. So it’s code I suppose, along with country music and Nascar to say “I’m white, your white, lets be privileged and white together!”. I wonder if it’s also code for higher education as they are based in Boston, the ultimate New England white University town.
Jodi Picoult as #2? I’ve never read her books, but hear they are nice. I guess now I’ll have to read one. As for some general findings – I see a lot of middle/upper classness (boats, horses, skiing, pilates, wine) and at the same time working class professions (nursing school, waitress). Also considerable self indulgence (baths, toes, getting dressed up, yoga, pilates) Personally if I was reading a profile that said all this, I’d run! It implies that she wants to live an expensive lifestyle, but not work jobs that could support it, meaning her partner would have to. But I suppose that is the white female prototype – be all cute and privileged, and stay in jobs that hold less status than that of their white husbands who will provide for them (and make them bonfires), while they cook (baking, cookbooks, new recipes).
Maybe that’s why we apparently really want to escape. Most of these women are urban, but say they are country girls who like bonfires, horseback riding, flea markets, thunderstorms, Ireland, and Eat Pray Love.
In all actuality, these aren’t necessarily what white women like, but what they think white men like that will make them more desirable. Advertising their hair, mascara, baseball, helping or serving professions, and some idealized romantic rural existence may say more about white men. Is this what you white guys like?
The other thing that these findings say, is what white women are not interested in. If you read the profiles of women from other races on the Okay Cupid blog, you will see that not only are white women the only women who don’t mention Alicia Keys, but they also don’t mention anything overtly political or covertly lefty in comparison to their women of color counterparts. oh whiteness.
I’d be interested to see what other people find when reviewing this data.
One thing is missing…stuff white women like…white men…they want white men all to themselves and detest the fact that asian women are competing with them for white men!
